COP16: Our Participation in the Summit

On October 24th, we had the opportunity to participate in a highly significant event on the global sustainability agenda: COP16 in Cali — a key platform for local and subnational governments to drive impactful actions in biodiversity conservation. Representing the ACUDE Foundation, Justo Bensusan, our Executive Coordinator, and Mayra Berezowski, external consultant, joined the dialogue at the Local and Subnational Hub in Place Quebec within the Blue Zone, where high-level activities took place.

This year’s summit placed strong emphasis on the implementation of the new biodiversity credit market, an innovative and fundamental tool offering a powerful alternative to address the biodiversity loss crisis. At ACUDE, we firmly believe in the need for efficient solutions that are both global and rooted in a locally inclusive approach. Our participation aimed not only to support the inclusion of regional governments in these conversations but also to promote financial mechanisms that strengthen our territories and communities.

A pivotal moment was the bilateral meeting with the delegation from the Province of Misiones and the Regions4 platform, joined by Minister Viviana Rovira, Ecology Minister Martin Recaman, and Dr. Emanuel Grassi of IMiBio. The discussion centered on the role that local governments can and should play in developing effective territorial actions for biodiversity. Collaboration with Regions4 is strategic, as it amplifies regional voices, ensuring their contributions are acknowledged in the global sustainability agenda.

Throughout the day, we also engaged in valuable dialogues with other leaders and organizations that share the mission of developing local solutions to global environmental issues. We had the pleasure of speaking with Juan David Durán, CEO of EcoRegistry, about the importance of transparency and integrity standards in environmental markets. EcoRegistry stands out for its information system, which ensures quality and traceability in the issuance of biodiversity credits, a strategic partnership for advancing a robust and reliable market.

In our meeting with Sophia Wood of Pachama, we discussed collaboration possibilities for nature restoration projects, crucial to boosting action in our regions. Pachama supports the development of nature-based carbon projects, incorporating technology to measure and verify positive environmental impact — a direction that directly aligns with ACUDE’s vision.

Likewise, with Julio Andrés Rozo, Director of Amazonía Emprende, we discussed integrating biodiversity into sustainable agricultural practices, closely tied to local Amazonian communities. This conversation was especially inspiring, as it revealed a shared pathway where biodiversity and sustainable production go hand in hand, respecting and strengthening local knowledge.

Finally, we had the opportunity to learn about the work of Liliana Paniagua at Redes Chaco, which promotes collective actions in the Gran Chaco Americano. We united around the urgency of protecting this biome, which faces one of the highest deforestation rates in the region and where collective action is vital for its preservation.

At ACUDE, we deeply appreciate the collaborative spaces and valuable knowledge exchange. This event not only consolidates our strategic alliances for biodiversity but also strengthens our commitment to continue developing practical solutions, with a territorial vision, that contribute to a sustainable future.
